NUTRITIONAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL STUDIES ON SOME FARM ANIMALS

This study was conducted at Animal Production Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Mansoura University. The experimental work was carried out at Rabbit Production Unit, Agricultural Research Center during March and April 2008.
The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of inclusion of dried distillers grains with oluble (DDGS) with or without sicozyme mixture enzyme on the performance of growing rabbits, digestibility, some blood constituents, carcass traits and measurements of some alimentary tract segments.
Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles were used at levels of 0, 10, 15 and 20% of the diets. The replacement of DDGS was mainly of control diet's yellow corn (0, 13.9, 35.4 and 56.8%) and soybean meal (0, 34.1, 53.5 and 72.8%) for diets 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively. However, Sycozyme enzyme was used at one level 0.5 g/kg diet). The criteria of response were body weight, weight gain, fed consumption and conversion, nutrients digestibility and feeding values, feed cost and economic efficiency, some blood constituents, carcass traits as well as some measurements of alimentary tract segments.
Eighty growing New Zealand White rabbits (NZW) at 8 weeks of age were divided into 8 groups, each of 10 animals. All groups had approximately equal means of live body weight. Each group of rabbits was fed on one of eight experimental diets till 14 weeks of age.
The rabbits were kept under the same managerial and hygienic conditions. Weekly live body weight and weekly feed intake were recorded.
At 14 weeks of age, eight digestion trials were carried out to determine the digestibility coefficients of various nutrients and the feeding value of the experimental diets.
At the end of the experimental period, (14 wk of age) eight digestibility trials were undertaken according to the recommendations of Fekete and Gippert (1982) for the standardization of digestibility experiments. Five animals from each experimental group were housed individually in metabolic cages, which allowed for feces and urine separation for 7 days as a preliminary-period and 10 days (skipped by a two-day rest period) as a collection period. During the test period, experimental diets and fresh water were offered ad libitum. Daily feed intake, feces excreted were accurately determined, and coprophagy was not prevented.
Quantitative collection of feces started 24 hours after offering the experimental diets, then the feces excreted by each rabbit was pooled, dried and then ground for chemical analysis. Apparent digestibility coefficients were calculated according to the classic formula described by Cheeke et al. (1982).
At 14 weeks of age, five rabbits from each treatment were randomly chosen and slaughtered after fasting for 18 hours. Rabbits were immediately weighed before and after slaughtering. Then, they were skinned and emptied. The weights of hot carcass, liver, kidney, heart, lungs, head and skin were recorded. All traits were calculated as percentage of the pre-slaughter weight. The total edible parts consisted of the carcass with head, liver, heart, abdominal fat and kidneys. Fur and blood losses, digestive tract weight (with) content and its parts' length were recorded.
At the end of the experimental at 14 weeks of age 5 rabbits were randomly selected from each treatment for blood sampling. Blood samples were collected during slaughter into heparinized tubes. Eight blood samples were divided into two parts, as in one part the plasma was isolated by centrifugation at 3000 rpm for 15 minutes. Concentrations of plasma total protein, total lipids, glucose, cholesterol and the activity of GOT and GPT were determined calorimetrically, using commercial kits of diagnostic examination.
The main results were as follow:
Effect of DDGS level:
5.1. Digestibility coefficients:
The digestibility coefficients did not differ significant statically for all diets except for organic matter. Regardless the significant effect the dry matter apparent coefficients were the highest in the second diet (10 % DDGS) and the lowest in the control diet. The values of diets 3 and 4 were in between.
The organic matter apparent coefficients were significant different. That, the third and fourth diets were the highest but the second diet is the lowest. Diet 1 is in between.
5.2. Nutritive values (TDN %, DCP % and DE Kcal / kg feed):
DDGS has no significant effects on nutritive values.
5.3. Some blood plasma constituents:
DDGS level has a significant effect on glucose, total lipids and cholesterol concentrations. But has no effect on total protein concentration and GOT and GPT activities. Glucose concentration in the 0 % of DDGS diet was the highest and the 15 % DDGS diet was the lowest and 10 and 20 DDGS diets are in between. The highest group in total lipids concentration was the control and the lowest groups were the 10 and 20 % DDGS diets. Cholesterol concentration toke the same trend like total lipids concentration but without significant effects. Regardless the significant difference, GPT activity was the same in all diet groups except the second group which decreased in GPT activity.
5.4. Live body weight:
The initial body weight of young rabbits at 8 weeks of age is nearly equal in all treatments, ranged from 1283.89 up to 1370.56 grams in average. The inclusion of DDGS at any level from 0 to 20 % of diets has no significant effects on live body weight throughout the experimental period.
5.5. Body weight gain per day:
At the first week of the experiment, the differences between groups were not significant. But after that, the differences were significant during the second week. After that, the body weight gain of rabbits at the 11th week through 14th week was not significant.
5.6. Daily feed intake:
The daily feed intake increased with trial weeks. But DDGS has no significantly effects on daily feed intake, that can be seen in non significant throughout all data.
5.7. Feed conversion ratio:
The feed conversion ratio increased with trial weeks but without significant effects except in the first two weeks of the experiment. Regardless the significance, the first and second diets are the highest and the last diet (20 % DDGS) is the lowest at the first week (9th week). At 10th week, the third and forth diets being the highest and the first and second diets being the lowest.
When the data presented in two separated periods, the DDGS effect was not significant at all periods. During the first period (week 8-11) the third and forth diets are the highest and the first and second diets being the lowest without significant effects.
At the second period (week 12- 14) the third diet was the highest and the second diet is the lowest and the first and the fourth diets are in between.
5.8. Protein efficiency ratio (PER):
The protein efficiency ratio decreased with trial weeks. But DDGS has no significant effect on protein efficiency ratio in the all periods, that, the first diet was the highest and third and forth diets were the lowest at the first period (week 8-11). At the second trial period (week 12-14) the first diet was the highest than all other diets. Through the total period the diets were the same as the second period.
5.9. Efficiency of energy utilization (EEU):
The efficiency of energy utilization decreased with trial periods. But DDGS has no significantly effect on efficiency of energy utilization.
5.10. Performance index (PI %):
DDGS has no significant effect on performance index in all experimental periods.
5.11. Feed cost / kg gain:
The feed cost / kg gain decreased in the first period than the second period. But DDGS has no significant effect on feed cost / kg gain at all periods.
During the first period, the third and forth diets were the highest, the first diet was the lowest and second diet was in between. During the second period, the third diet was the highest, the second diet was the lowest and second and forth diets were in between. During the whole period, the third diet was the highest, the first and second diets were the lowest and forth diet was in between.
5.12. Economic efficiency (%):
DDGS was significant affected on economic efficiency (%) in the first period (p ≤ 0.01), that, the first diet was the highest than other diets.
5.13. Carcass traits:
At 14 weeks of age, when the carcass traits evaluation happened, the differences in fasted live weight of rabbits weren't significant. Also carcass relative weight, head absolute and relative weights, liver absolute and relative weights, heart absolute and relative weights, kidney absolute and relative weights and total edible parts absolute and relative weights were not significant.
But DDGS has a significant effect on carcass absolute weight. It must be noted that total edible parts relative weight is the dressing percentage.
The 3rd and 4th experimental groups were higher in carcass absolute weight than the first and second groups. And the relative liver weight was the highest in the second group and the lowest in the last group, but the first and the third group are in-between. In contrast, without the significant effects the kidney relative weight was the highest in the last group and the lowest in the first group, however, the second and third group are in- between. Total edible parts relative weight was like kidney relative weight.
5.14. Offal traits:
Blood loss absolute and relative weights were different significantly. Being the first group is the highest than other groups. Fur absolute and relative weight was not significant.
5.15. Measurements of some alimentary tract segments:
The four studied traits of digestive tract (stomach , small intestine, large intestine and cecum length) were different among experimental groups but these differences did not significant statically except for large intestine length. That the third group (15 % DDGS diet) is the highest than other groups.
Effect of enzyme:
From the beginning of the trial period till the end, although there were numerical differences between groups, no significantly effects were reported of enzyme addition for all studied traits except total lipids concentration which being the added group higher than no added group.
Effect of interaction:
There were no significantly effects of interaction for all studied traits except economic efficiency (%) at the period 8-11 weeks of age and total lipid and cholesterol concentrations.

Conclusion
It could be concluded that DDGS could partially used as an alternative source for energy and protein in rabbit diets up to 20% without enzyme supplementation with no adverse effects on growth performance, carcass traits and animal health in general.
Further studies are required to clarify the effects of higher levels of DDGS with different farm animals at different productive and physiological stages using different plans nutrition.
