Educational policy in the Arab countries

It is obvious

Non-that

Arab .

    Edward Francis

The Educational Policy in the Arab Countries

It is a know fact that the educational policy in any country seeks first and foremost to deepen the spirit of national identity which is one of the most vital components of its existence and singularity. The language comes at the forefront of these components; hence, countries demand of anyone who comes to study in them to learn their language, even if such language is not used in some education specializations, and we understand that

Remarkably, many Arab countries pursue a policy which is totally at variance with those applied by other countries in the world. Most Arab countries impose the use of English or French in a good number of undergraduate specializations, particularly the applied ones, as if the Arabic language were powerless to translate the terminology of those specializations

The Arabic language had been the instrument through which the Arab culture and Islamic civilization were transmitted to the world, and was able, due to its unique characteristics, to absorb and assimilate the cultures and sciences of other nations, while maintaining the strength and soundness of its original roots. Furthermore, the Arabic language is still capable of containing new concepts. The superbly successful experience of translating university courses into Arabic in recent times is the best example that testifies to this fact

Education policy in the Arab world

Obviously, education policy in any given country seeks initially to deepen the spirit of national identity; as being a key element of its existence and specificities. Language comes on top of such elements; and therefore states impose learning of their languages as a prerequisite for all international students to be admitted in their universities, even if the language is not used in some disciplines; which we appreciate.

Strikingly, many Arab countries adopt a completely different policy compared to the rest of the world. Most of the Arab countries impose English or French in quite a few college disciplines, topped by the Applied disciplines, as if Arabic language has barren and incapable of localizing the terminologies of such disciplines.

Arabic was the tool that disseminated Arab culture and Islamic civilization to the world and, thanks to its characteristics, it could accommodate the cultures and sciences of the other nations, while maintaining the durability of its assets and remaining deep-rooted. Also, Arabic language remains capable of accommodating everything new; and the experiences of Arabicization of college education in the modern era, which proved to be highly successful despite being few, are the best evidence.
