Explanation of the Modifier
First of all, as our teacher had explained in his book, a compound noun: is a noun plus noun (N+N) combination, in which the second element is the head (H) of construction and the first element is a kind of modifier (M)".
Now, the 'Head noun' is the main subject, the concept which is modified (explained) by what we call a modifier.
A Modifier is: a word or phrase that modifies the head noun. A modifier describes, clarifies, or gives more detail about a concept.
For example:
1) The fixed car.
Our main object in this sentence, or in other words the head noun, is the word car.
The word "fixed" gives the status, adds explanation to the situation of the car, and modifies it.
2) The ten year old boy.
Our main object here is the boy, which mean, it's the head noun. The word 'Ten-year-old' explains and modifies the status of this boy
