Contrast
In order to be well-acquainted with Contrast, you have to bear in mind that contrast is the state of being strikingly different from something else in juxtaposition or close association, and the following words can be of great help to you:-
1- although, even though, though, despite the fact that, nevertheless
They occur at the beginning of the sentence or in the middle of it before the subject, making it a subordinate clause that can not stand alone. Such words involve contrary sense to the main clause. The contrast can be identified through negation or opposite meaning as indicated in the following examples
a- Although it is very hot now, Sam is wearing an overcoat
b- The player will take part in the game even though his father has passed away
c- The baby has not taken any medicine though he is extremely ill
d- Despite the fact that he has a driving permit, he can not drive a car
e- He prepared for the TOEFL very well, nevertheless he failed it
2- but, yet, however
They normally occur in the middle of two main sentences. Had they been used in a sentence , the second sentence should've been called subordinate clause whereas the first one is called main sentence. The contrast can be identified through negation or opposite meaning as indicated in the following examples
a. I am terribly hungry, but I don't feel like eating anything
b. The exam seemed easy; yet, no one did well
c. It was a 26-hour trip; however, none of the tourists felt thirsty
Note that "however" can also be used differently. It can be followed by an adjective or an adverb , a subject and a verb. Example
a- However high the mountain is, Mary, the child of 13 climbed it last year
b- The policeman took her driving license, however regularly she was driving
3- in spite of , despite
They occur at the beginning of the sentence or in the middle of it before the object, making it a phrase that can not stand alone. Such expressions involve contrary sense to the main clause. The contrast can be identified through negation or opposite meaning as indicated in the following examples
a- In spite of his wealth, he goes to office by bus.
b- She spoke to him despite his rudeness.
