Let Us Hail Spring
By Ahmad Shawqi
Translated by: Mahmoud Abbas Masoud
Behold, here comes March! Come friend,
Let us hail Spring, the garden of souls.
Gather the cheerful companions beneath its banner;
Spread on its green meadows the rug of exhilaration
A felicitous delight has been made available,
Such serene occasion is not indefinitely granted.
Rest in the laughing gardens and rhythmically clap your hands
To the accompaniment of strings and drinking vessels
Enjoy the company of cup-bearers,
Strikingly handsome, brilliant like the stars.
Of pleasing manners, fit to wait on kings;
Adorned with noble qualities,
Large-hearted and accommodating
Let your morning sip be an offspring of the two parents:
The grapes and the apples.
Hilariously laughs as often as you tap its casket,
Permeating the atmosphere with splendor and aroma sweet
She mightily overwhelms, and when remembering her noble sources,
She bestows on the intoxicated a garb of soberness.
Pharaoh saved it for the occasion of his victorious conquest,
Setting aside a portion thereof for Ptah
Between a warbler whose jungle is the assemblage,
And forest-veiled nymphs in tall trees;
A singer tackles his strings, inspiring a chirper
Loudly caroling on its branches
White hooded, in black garments attired,
In collars and foot-ornaments adorned.
Reciting amidst leafy nooks their chants,
As nuns do on Easter Morn
Swaying gracefully amidst thrones and rostrums,
In a vast temple, fragrant, emerald-green.
King of lush plants, every land his home,
Celebrating his arrival with wedding-like joyous ceremonies
His scarlet-red, snow-white banners, hover above green hills,
Luxuriant thickets don their finest fineries, honoring his arrival
Joyously dancing in his blossom-decked courts
He makes his way to homes through narcissus glances,
Wafting his aromas through daisies lips.
Behold the heads of the wallflowers, bent in reverence for his majesty,
Their crowns impart sweet scents to all
Rows of roses are unfolding on thrones of branches,
Face to face are singing the praises of the Divine Opener.
Processions of blossoms stand out in sun-warmed meadows,
Distinguished from other flowers by defensive thorns
The soft breeze wafts tenderly on the cheeks of blossoms,
Imprinting kisses, as do lips on lovely cheeks of lasses.
The cruel hand of death disfigures their faces at night,
Depriving them of their surpassing beauty
The death of roses and of all transient things,
Apprises you that life is impermanent, short-lived.
Petals of sweetbrier on their twigs,
Like gems adorning spears’ crests
The delicate and pure jasmine
Resembles the clear thoughts of a reflective walker;
Peering glowingly through the stems,
Like streaks of dawn illumining leafy branches
The petals of the pomegranate flower are blood stained,
Their edges scarlet-red, like a butcher’s ring.
The sad violets like a mother bereft of her child,
Facing destiny with awe and righteous resolves
Tender violas are pensive,
Sadly reflective like poets’ mood on sorrowful occasions.
The spruce trees, with flowing garments, expose their trunks
Like revealed legs of a lovely young lady
The slim palm trees don headbands;
Adorned with loincloths and scarves.
Like Pharaoh’s daughters witnessing processions,
Beneath canopies on a scorching day
The open space is like an alabaster wall,
With magnificent scenes intricately displayed.
The clouds resemble heavy ostriches:
Some lazily perching, others soaring high
The Sun lovelier than a bride, veiled with glittering gold
On day of wedding-ceremony.
The water in the valley resembles streams of mercury,
Or silvery blades scattered about
The Sun dispatched its rays, ornamenting the floating lotus;
Scintillating on leaves of branches,
Like jewels glittering in the hand
Water wheels sound like village wailers,
Alternating between moans and groans.
They complain, though never before known love,
Shedding tears from eyes that never cease
Each thirsty, with exposed ribs,
Though plenty of water in their bellies.
Crying when running slow, laughing when running fast,
Like camels between liveliness and exhaustion
Bound in chains and shackles, whereas its neighbor
Blindfolded, heavily burdened with its weighty yoke.
The charming beauties of spring reminds me
Of youth and its happy events
It was like one of its own flowers,
Snuffed out by obliteration’ hand, albeit sinless.
(Hall Caine) of Egypt is a never ending story, The
Writers and commentators are still at work
It has records of papyrus, Psalms, Torah, Koran and the New Testament,
As well as Mina, Cambyses, Alexander, the two Caesars, and the magnificent Salahuddin
Such beings and eras are treasure-troves,
Spur your imagination to get the key.
The land’s horizon studded with stars and luminaries,
So long as you, Spring, in the land residing
