Abu Firas and the Dove

أقُولُ وَقَدْ نَاحَتْ بِقُرْبي حمامَةٌ:
أيَا جَارَتَا، هَلْ تَشعُرِينَ بِحَالي؟
I said as a dove mournfully cooed near me:
O neighbor! Are you aware of my situation,
Is your cooing in sympathy for my condition
مَعاذَ الهَوَى! ما ذُقتِ طارِقةَ النّوَى
وَلا خَطَرَتْ مِنكِ الهُمُومُ ببالِ
I have tasted of sorrow and separation
More than you ever experienced
And the worries I have known
Never occurred to you
أتَحْمِلُ مَحْزُونَ الفُؤادِ قَوَادِمٌ
عَلى غُصُنٍ نَائِي المَسَافَةِ عَالِ؟
Is it possible that you carry sorrow in your heart
While perching on a high branch,
With a respectable distance above the ground
أيَا جَارتَا، ما أنْصَفَ الدّهْرُ بَينَنا!
تَعَالَيْ أُقَاسِمْكِ الهُمُومَ، تَعَالِي!
O my neighbor, the dove!
Life has not dealt fairly with us.
Come hither, that I may share
My uneasy feelings with you
تَعَالَيْ تَرَيْ رُوحاً لَدَيّ ضَعِيفَةً،
تَرَدّدُ في جِسْمٍ يُعَذّبُ بَالي
Come nigh, and you shall find a soul: my soul
Frail and feeble, in a body that tortures my mind
أيَضْحَكُ مأسُورٌ، وَتَبكي طَلِيقَةٌ،
وَيَسْكُتُ مَحزُونٌ، وَيَندبُ سالِ؟
Must a prisoner laugh while a free bird weep?
Shall the sorrow-filled by quiet
While the indifferent wail
لَقد كنتُ أوْلى مِنكِ بالدّمعِ مُقلَةً،
وَلَكِنّ دَمْعي في الحَوَادِثِ غَالِ!
O dove, my eyes are more deserving
Of shedding tears than yours
My tears, however, are, in adversity, hard to flow

أقول وقد ناحت بقربي حمامة
Je disais à une colombe qui roucoulait en face de moi
أيا جارتا هل بات حالك حالي

معاذ الهوى ما ذقت طارقة النوى
Dieu m’en garde! Vous n’éprouviez ni mes malheurs de séparation
ولا خطرت منك الهموم ببال
Ni pouviez imaginer mes ennuis et soucis
أتحمل محزون الفؤاد قوادم
Est-il possible que vos rémiges portent un cœur si malheureux
على غصن نائي المسافة عالي
Alors que vous êtes hors d’atteinte, souverainement perchée sur une branche?
أيا جارتا ما أنصف الدهر بيننا
O amie ! La vie n’est pas juste entre nous deux
تعالى أقاسمك الهموم تعالي
Rapprochez-vous donc de moi, pour vous faire partager mes chagrins
تعالي تري روحا لدي ضعيفة
Rapprochez-vous donc de moi, et vous trouverez une âme affaiblie
تردد في جسم يعذب بالي
Qui se meut au tréfonds d’un corps martyrisé
أيضحك مأسور وتبكي طليقة
Arrive-t-il qu’un détenu puisse s’amuser, pendant que celle qui est affranchie, lamente ?
ويسكت محزون ويندب سالي
Arrive-t-il qu’un affligé puisse s’apaiser, pendant que celle qui est apaisée, sanglote ?
لقد كنت أولى منك بالدمع مقلة
Mes yeux seraient plus disposés aux pleurs que les vôtres
ولكن دمعي في الحوادث غالي
Seulement, il me déshonore de les verser dans le malheur
