May God Bless Those Nights of Ours!
A Poem By Abdul Wahab Al-Qutb
Eulogizing His Departed Friend Khamis Lutfi
Translated by: Mahmoud Abbas Masoud
The heart was stilled after long suffering
And sought quietude in the regions of the hereafter.
The branching trees are empty
After their constant humming
With sweet wishes and soft songs.
May God bless those special nights of ours
That we spent together, dear Khamis!
You epitomized the essence of giving and abiding loyalty
O how delightful were those days of ours,
Splendid and fresh like roses!
O my Khamis! Your presence is keenly felt In my heart,
Your smiles were like a heavenly luminary.
As for me, my Khamis,
With you, I always felt like a little child
Ever with a sweet smile resembling the full moon.
Always moved to smile when fascinated by your poetry
And when offering my genuine praise to you
Some people are comforted by a verse
Many were your verses that brought me solace.
Such was my poetry betwixt my soberness and intoxication,
Sad will be my poetry amidst my anguish and isolation
We shall all depart, for death is approaching with a rapid pace,
So,do wait for the day of my arrival, my dear Khamis
