what keeps the swallows for another day
A Bouquet of Haiku
byHouda Hajji
Translated by Nizar sartawi
now my rosemary
with these little flowers
you’ve injured me
~ ~ ~
the last bunch of grapes
that keeps them for another day
the migrating swallows
~ ~ ~
through the window pane
face to face with a sparrow
that doesn’t see me
~ ~ ~
what is with the goldfinch
isn’t he tempted by an apple
a paradise that brings misery upon beaks
~ ~ ~
beginning of summer
spiking bending
for the reapers’ sickles
~ ~ ~
behind the palm tree
the setting sun
broken fronds
~ ~ ~
in the wind
dirt is not a homeland
for anyone
~ ~ ~
at sunset
two clouds on the twilight edges
face to face
~ ~ ~
mountain cliffs
willows hang down
combing the river channel
~ ~ ~
a low autumn sky
a goldfinch
neither perching nor flying
~ ~ ~
~ ~ ~
a shadowy spot
the chrysanthemum doing all it can
to help the broken butterfly
~ ~ ~
the first autumn night
cicadas’ voices subdued
by the clatter of the rain
~ ~ ~
flutter o butterfly
In your fans
is a little breeze
~ ~ ~
the first flashes of lightening
the river grass
shivers
~ ~ ~
from one leaf to another
a drop of water
as sliding towards the abyss
~ ~ ~
in the hot sand
the rain digs
its grave
~ ~ ~
in the branch of the tree
my dress was caught
the red berries are picking me
~ ~ ~
as you laugh
the moon is a white flower
blossoming in your mouth
~ ~ ~
as you sing
the garden nightingales drink
from the mouths of chrysanthemums
~ ~ ~
