Candles That Give No Light
Anwar Salman
Translated by Nizar Sartawi
Like any traveler
I encamp in the evening
on a land
that I imagine to be the homeland of poesy…
when words fail me!
There I set my tents
thinking
that I have
gathered my runaway visions
borrowed the doves’ cooing for my voice
that I have
settled on the throne of poesy!
~ ~ ~ ~
I light the candles of alphabets around me
and go on
with a thousand colors in my feather,
dreaming, I travel with the waves of the inkwell…
disturbing the sleep of all notebooks
and getting drowned –
drowned in the blueness of the dream, that
if I call upon an angel for inspiration
to capture those visions and feelings,
I come back
as the night of my paths turns foggy
and above my eyelids lies a mirage
and clouds!
I put out all the candles of speech
and stay with cigarette ashes
to drop the shadows of curtains around me,
and sleep
in a line of poetry, on which I reflect!
